Rosemary as a Christmas Plant
Of all the plants associated with the holiday season, the rosemary is by far the one I couldn’t live without. It adds so much joy.
One of the most noticeable features of the rosemary is its unique scent. The aroma seems so crisp and clean. The blue-gray color of the foliage adds a pleasing shade at a time when most other Christmas plants are a true green.
Of course rosemary adds flavor to our food during this season as well. There are even special varieties recommended for grilling. Any type of rosemary is great for adding to bread and baked items.
The rosemary plant can assume many forms, depending on the variety’s growth habit. In addition to the upright ones, there are also creeping and prostrate ones as well. Some specially trained types are often sold for the holidays. Sometimes, they’re trained into orbs, wreaths, or other decorative form for the holidays. Overall, I prefer the classic pyramidal shaped ones because they’re reminiscent of a Christmas tree.
Rosemary sprigs also show up in various holiday decorations. These include garlands, holiday greenery, and wreaths.
After the holidays are over, the rosemary plant can be planted outdoors in zones eight through ten. There is a white flowered variety that is hardy to ten degrees Fahrenheit. Most rosemary plants sold for the holidays are the species plant. If you prefer some other special variety that might be more hardy, I would recommend first checking with local independent garden centers in your area. If they don’t have any available, a number of garden catalogs list these.
In cold climates, the rosemary can be treated as a house plant. Indoors, it needs full sun and daytime temperatures in the 70s and night time temperatures of 40s to 60s. Be sure and use a quick draining potting soil. Otherwise, the ones grown in containers can develop root rots.
When grown outdoors, this shrub needs full sun and a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Typically, as a house plant rosemary will reach two to 4½ feet in height. When planted outdoors, this can be six feet tall.
